DECLARE YOURSELF AND UWIRE LAUNCH VOTER REGISTRATION WIDGET
Widget allows for simple online registration across the Internet
Program enlists college journalists to virally distribute the Widget and promote the most registrations of young voters for 2008 presidential election
WASHINGTON, DC (October 25, 2007) –Declare Yourself, the national nonpartisan, nonprofit youth voter registration initiative and UWIRE, the leading national news service for student-produced journalism and a division of CSTV Networks, Inc., today unveiled a viral online Widget to promote voter registration among college students across the Internet. The announcement was made at the National College Media Convention in Washington, DC.
The Declare Yourself/UWIRE Widget allows students to insert an Interactive voter registration tool on college newspaper websites, where it can be easily and virally shared via social networks such as myspace and Facebook. By using the Widget, college students can easily encourage their friends and fellow students to register and vote in the 2008 presidential primaries and general election. The Widget can be activated by pasting a simple piece of software code on any webpage, blog or social network page.
The Widget also contains the latest student coverage of candidates and campaign issues, gathered by UWIRE, as well as polling apparatus and an ability to track which schools have registered the most students via the Widget.
The partnership underscores the commitment of UWIRE to create awareness and participation in the voting process among today’s youth and Declare Yourself’s acknowledgment that cutting-edge technology is needed to accomplish that goal.
“We can’t expect the audience to automatically arrive at our doorstep,” said Marc Morgenstern, Executive Director of Declare Yourself. “To register millions of new voters, we recognize that we must reach out through technology and partners, such as UWIRE, who know college students and media so well.”
“Declare Yourself’s goal is an important one and so we are happy to partner with them, thereby helping to inform young voters about the key issues of the campaign and compel them to register so that they have a voice in the election's outcome,” said Ben French, General Manager of UWIRE.
This relationship with UWIRE continues Declare Yourself’s mission of encouraging 18-24 year-olds to participate in the 2008 primaries and general election and emphasizes the importance of first-time voting. Research shows that getting a young person to register and vote at the age of 18 is the strongest predictor of lifelong voting behavior and civic commitment. To entice 18-year-olds to the polls in 2008 through technology, Declare Yourself has also partnered with Cricket Wireless, MySpace, Yahoo, Google, Evite and Clear Channel, in addition to leveraging the star power of more than 50 celebrity friends and advisory board members.
